Good Health! [ slanj'-uh]
A Scottish toast that I took more than once recently while in Scotland.
The 20th Annual Golden Spurtle was held in an enchanting town named Carrbridge, which is a delightful 4 hour train ride north from Scotland’s capitol city Edinburgh. This year I was overjoyed to win Bob’s Red Mill Spar for the Spurtle contest, which was held in Milwaukee, Oregon, a small outlying town from Portland. A true dream come true for me and my husband, since the Oregon contest provided an all-expense trip to Scotland for two, plush cash to allow us to extend our trip for another few days post competition. The above photos are a montage created by a young and talented videographer/photographer/filmaker/producer named Fergus Thom, who lives locally in Carrbridge.
Before I travelled to the UK, I researched the contest and discovered some lovely videos made by Fergus on youtube. Not meeting him yet, I presumed he was in his mid 50s or 60s with a world of experience behind him since his videos were magical to me. The audio. The visual. The pure raw and extreme talent. To my utter amazement, Mr. Thom ended up being younger than my youngest son. I delight in such talent at such a young age, and I anticipate his future success to be staggering for us all to watch. Below is a photo of Fergus (in the middle) with some of his colleagues. I look forward to seeing his genius work of art as he edits the recent Golden Spurtle video and has it ready for the public. You know I’ll be publishing it on my blog here. Since I just arrived back home late last night, my photos of my experience in Scotland are forthcoming, but just know that I will try my best to relive the experience for you, so check back in a few days for the results. In the meantime, good work Fergus Thom-and Slàinte!
I’ve made a few amateur videos to capture the contest and the trip, if you’d like to take a peek ~

Nothing like home movies, and I’ve added some Celtic music to all of the above for your listening pleasure.
